Have you ever wrapped up a big project for your business, launched the thing, and then just wanted to run away from your business and hide under a rock?
I have. A lot. And I know that every entrepreneur struggles with too. It’s called burnout.
According to Psychology Today, burnout is a state of chronic stress that leads to:
- physical and emotional exhaustion
- cynicism and detachment
- feelings of ineffectiveness and lack of accomplishment
Maybe you’ve felt like this too. Or maybe you’re going through it as you’re reading this. I want to let you know these feelings are normal and totally valid. I give you permission to feel what you’re feeling. Let’s acknowledge and accept it them for what they are.
Now, let’s figure out how to get back on track so you can find the joy in your business again. Which is what my intention is for this post! Keep reading to learn my 5 tips to overcome burnout on your business and feel inspired and motivated again.
1. Take Time For Yourself
I mentioned that it’s okay to feel burned out. I feel like a lot of entrepreneurs try to deny how they’re really feeling or suppress their emotions by taking on more work.
I personally have done this and I’ll tell you this: denial and suppression don’t help to resolve the issue. It only makes it worse.
So if you can become aware that you’re feeling burned out (refer to those “symptoms” I listed at the beginning) you need to accept them. With acceptance comes forgiveness and then moving on to return to feeling inspired and motivated again.
And the best way to do this is to fulfill your desire to “run away” from your business…by taking time for yourself.
There are many things you can do away from your business, I’m sure you already have some ideas! But the main thing to keep in mind is to do something you enjoy that’s not related to your business.
I will even suggest taking a digital detox, even if it’s for 24 hours. Taking time away from what everyone else is doing and focusing on what you’re doing and just being present will help you regain your mojo.
2. Get Inspired Again
While you go on holiday from your biz, you’re probably thinking AH but what will I do with all that free time?!
In my experience getting away from my business and immersing myself in non-biz activities is when new ideas come to me.
So try a new hobby, go somewhere new, try a new recipe, pick up a new book, binge-watch Netflix…
Remember you want it to be joyful activities. When you can feel joy again, you will open up yourself to receive new ideas without even trying.
Some ways I like to get inspired include:
- Being active (exercise, yoga, going for a walk)
- Watching an empowering documentary
- Taking a mini getaway (or a big getaway!)
- Going to a coffee shop
- Browsing the shelves at my local library
- Going on a dinner date with my partner or friend
3. Evaluate Your Business
Another leading cause of burnout is due to putting so much time, energy, and heart into something only to not get the results you were hoping for.
Some of you may call this *failure.*
Failure comes with the territory of having a business. Trust me, I had to learn this the hard way!
Once I stopped beating myself over not reaching my goals and viewed failure as feedback, my perspective changed.
Now I can look at failure as insight into my business–whether a strategy I tried worked or didn’t. Or maybe my messaging was off. Or maybe I didn’t promote something enough.
When we fail so many times or fail hard we are susceptible to becoming burned out.
We might be physically or mentally exhausted or feel like a fraud.
Instead of ruminating in these feelings (remember, it’s okay to feel them, but you need to take action to get back into alignment) embrace your burnout as an opportunity to evaluate your business.
You might also call this a business audit. Take a step back and see what’s working and what’s not working in your business.
But most importantly, analyze what’s bringing you joy in your business and what’s draining you.
Anything that’s not working or draining you needs to GO.
Doing a business audit is a good tactic to give your business a refresh and bring more things into it that makes you happy.
4. Set Some Damn Boundaries
Maybe your burnout is a sign that you’re doing way too much and it’s time to set some boundaries.
This could be boundaries for you or boundaries between you and other people.
For me, I have to set boundaries for myself. In the beginning stages of my business, I would work whenever I could. Once I got home from my 9-5, I’d hop on my laptop. Then work until taking a short break for dinner. Then getting back on my laptop until bed.
This is not a sustainable way to grow your business OR live your life!
And I quickly learned that the hard way after pushing myself for so long. Eventually, things will catch up to you and…burnout sets in.
The way I overcame this was by setting boundaries between me and my business. I set up office hours: specific times when I “clock in” and “clock out” of my business.
I’m the kind of person that really needs to separate work and play, so having office hours has really helped me become more present and focused on both my business (meaning I get more done) and my life (meaning I get to experience joy on a regular basis.)
Boundaries might also need to be set between you and other people.
Whether it’s your partner, family, roommate, kids, or even your clients…acknowledging that you feel like people are stepping on your toes and it’s holding you back from growing an aligned business means you can take the next steps to set some boundaries.
5. Get Organized & Get Help
Maybe you’re burned out because your biz is a hot mess and you’re constantly putting out fires. Consider this recent burnout a gift from the biz gods letting you know that you need to get your ish together.
Maybe it’s time to beef up your workflow or maybe you don’t even have a workflow…well it’s time to create one.
Look at your business audit and ask yourself how your systems and processes are. Is there room to switch things up or improve things? Make things easier?
Getting organized doesn’t just apply to your business strategy or systems. Is your office a mess? Is your house a mess? Maybe you’re surrounded by clutter. Time to Marie Kondo EVERYTHING in your life and biz!
When you work through figuring out your systems and all that jazz, you may come to realize that you’re trying to do everything your business because you are the best at what you do, right?
Does “recovering perfectionist” resonate with you?
Yeah, me too. I tend to obsess over little details (both in my business, my 9-5, and personal life) and sometimes I just want to do everything myself because I want to be in control.
Girl, if your need to be in complete control is causing you stress and headaches, it’s time to let go.
Now, you don’t need to get in a tizzy and let go of everything. You can ease into it. A first step might look like acknowledging that you’re doing too much and you need help.
Your next step may be asking for help. Or to consider hiring someone to help you.
Again, I encourage you to follow these 5 tips in order and to spend some time evaluating your business.
When you can see what’s working and what’s not, but most importantly what’s bringing you joy and what’s NOT…you can then take the intentional steps to change things and feel inspired and motivated again!
