You landed on my blog because you want to make money with your blog, right? Maybe even turn it into a full-time business so you can be free and make a living doing what you love?
But do you also feel like something is holding you back from making this happen?
Have you ever thought to yourself…
- It’s too soon to make money with your blog
- It’s impossible to make money at the stage you’re in
- You need traffic and an audience first before you can monetize
Especially that last one…so many bloggers get tripped up because they think they need to focus on driving traffic to their blog and then build an audience before they can even start thinking about the money side of things.
But do you want to know what I think? I think you should focus on the money stuff FIRST then work backward from there.
If you want to learn how to do this, keep reading to learn my step-by-step strategy to start making money as a blogger so you can turn your blog into a business!
When I rebranded my blog in the summer of 2017 I had an end goal in mind.
I wanted to turn my blog into a business. Specifically a coaching business. I knew I loved teaching and helping people, and I wanted to combine that with my passion for blogging.
About 5 months after mapping out my vision, I landed my first coaching client (without even trying!)
Now, if I didn’t have my long-term goal in mind when I sat down to relaunch my blog, I KNOW that I wouldn’t have grown my blog into a business as quickly as I did.
In this blog post, I want to share that plan with you so you can take action today to turn your blog into a business.
And if you feel stuck because you need traffic first, then an audience…pay very close attention because this blog post is for you.
Traffic and an audience are definitely important for a blogging business BUT there are also a few other very important things you need to focus on too. So let’s dive in!Beginner's Guide to Start Making Money as a Blogger Click To Tweet
1. Map Out Your Vision
What’s your long-term plan for your blog? Do you want to turn it into a full-time business, leaving your current job? Or do you just want it to be a side hustle?
Do you want to help people through your blog? Or maybe inspire them? Or entertain them?
Do you want to work with brands and promote other people’s products?
Or do you love teaching and helping people that you want to sell your knowledge and expertise through a digital product or service such as coaching?
Or maybe a combination of both?
Your vision can change over time. In fact, it WILL and that’s completely okay.
But you need to sit down and spend some time getting clear on your vision in the present moment so you can move forward with confidence.
Don’t let your uncertainty and indecision about your future hold you back. Tune into what feels good NOW and focus on that.
This will give you direction, which is what you need first before moving forward.Don't let your uncertainty and indecision about your future hold you back. Tune into what feels good NOW and focus on that. Click To Tweet
Next: define your why.
Ask yourself why you want to monetize your blog. Why you want to turn it into a business. Why you want help others through coaching or an eBook.
This will keep your eyes on the big picture and help you overcome self-doubt and those moments where you lack motivation and just want to watch Netflix (which will happen A LOT. Trust me.)
2. Get Clear on Who You Serve (a.k.a. Pick a Niche)
This part is soooo important and will be the driving force behind your blogging business.
When you don’t know who you want to help, you’re not going to know what kind of offers to create that people will want to buy.
And then you won’t make any money!
Now, this whole “niche part” is what trips up a lot of bloggers. Including myself.
I feel like a lot of bloggers in my community hate the word niche and try to run as far away as they can from it.
Girl, same here!!
The key though is to not narrow WHAT kind of content you create, but narrow WHO you’re creating the content for.
Getting super clear and specific about who you serve will give all you multi-passionate bloggers out there a little room to breathe.
Now that you know what kind of business you want to turn your blog into and WHO you want to target with your business, you can move onto the next steps with a super clear focus.
3. Establish Your Online Presence
After you get clear on your niche (by knowing exactly who you help and how you help them) it’s time to stand out and get noticed online!
During this stage, your goal will be to become known for something which means you will earn your target audience’s trust.

This is the part of your journey I like to call building your personal brand. A personal brand is you and your business identity. It’s how you present and market yourself online.
A powerful personal brand will allow you SO much freedom in your business.
You can show up authentically, raw, and real and focus more on things that make you feel good and less on things that make you feel like crap.
FYI: To build a personal brand you need to show up CONSISTENTLY and become memorable for something. Also, branding is an ongoing thing. It’s something you’ll always have to maintain as you grow.
4. Attract Your Target Audience
Okay guys this is when you can start focusing on driving traffic!!
During this stage, you’re going to be focusing on strategies to boost your blog traffic.
Because we can’t grow an audience and business without people seeing our stuff, right?
Here’s how you do that.
Write Share-Worthy Blog Posts
Driving traffic to your blog starts with content that people actually want to read. So it’s important to get clear on who you’re writing for and how you’re helping them (this is what you worked on in steps 1 and 2!)
Great content is content that has a purpose. It’s written for the reader and adds value to their life, whether it’s inspiring, helpful, or entertaining.
Since you have your long-term vision mapped out and know who you want to help, you’ll be able to come up with blog content ideas that people will love AND will drive visitors to your paid offers.
And even if you don’t plan on launching any paid offers just yet, it’s still important to build a warm audience who will become ready to purchase from you when you’re ready to sell to them.
Make Your Blog Posts SEO-Friendly
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a strategy to get organic traffic to your site by adding relevant keywords or keyword phrases to your blog posts.
In layman’s terms, this is how you make your blog posts more visible to Google. If Google likes what you have to offer it will rank you higher in the search engine, meaning more people will find your posts!
SEO at its basic level involves using keywords strategically, but there is a lot more that goes into it to ensure it works effectively.
Create a Pinterest Strategy
Pinterest is the #1 way to get consistent traffic to your blog. I’m not going to waste your time (or mine!) talking about anything else.
When you’re just starting out you’re going to want to spend a few weeks to a month optimizing your Pinterest and creating a growth strategy.
I know this might seem like a lot of work but trust me, it’ll be well worth it in the end.
5. Grow Your Community
This is usually the next stage bloggers think they need to focus on after traffic!
I like to refer to my audience as my “community” because it forces me to remember that I’m here to HELP PEOPLE, not grow my numbers.
Quality over quantity people!
To grow your community intentionally you need to focus on attracting the right people a.k.a. your target audience.
Which shouldn’t be a problem because you already worked on this in steps 1 and 2 (your vision and who you help.)
Then you can use your personal brand (step 3) and blog content (step 4) to attract those people.
Build Your Email List
While you focus on growing your community you’re also going to want to focus on building your email list as well.
I have a ton of blog posts on list-building, which you can check out below to bookmark for later!

6. Create and Launch a Specific Paid Offer
Okay, we made it to the actual money-making part!
But don’t skip the other steps so fast sista, you need to have your ducks in a row before you start trying to make money, k?
Now that you know your vision for your blogging business, who you want to help, and how you’re going to attract those people, you’re ready to create a paid offer.
I have a blog post that outlines the 5 major ways bloggers can make money that you can read here.
Here are a few tips when it comes to creating a paid offer:
- Make sure it solves a problem your audience is struggling with
- That problem should be a specific problem for a specific group of people
- Validate your offer idea before you actually create it (make sure people will want to buy it!)
Now creating your paid offer is just one minor part in this journey, you’re going to need a way to launch it to your audience so they can buy it from you.
There are MANY different launch strategies out there and to be totally honest, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to launching.
A general rule of thumb that I recommend bloggers follow is to launch your offers to where your audience is hanging out the most and you feel comfortable and confident selling on.
For me, it’s my email list and Facebook group. I also love launching with live webinars because they’re fun!
7. Experiment and Change What Doesn’t Work
Making money with your blog and turning it into a business is going to look different for everyone.
And I won’t lie and say it’s going to be easy. The best thing you can always keep in mind is that not everything will be an overnight success right off the bat.
I mean, a lot of the successful entrepreneurs we see online today have been in business for YEARS.
For me, my business is still a baby. I’ve spent months in a trial and error stage figuring out what the best income streams are for me AND my audience.
It’s an ongoing journey guys!
If something doesn’t work out right away you can’t let it trip you up–learn from it and move on!
And remember, if you spend time working on the foundational stuff (your vision and target audience) everything else will fall into place!
