Why an Email List?
I have an entire blog post on WHY you need an email list for your blog and business here, but I’ll give you one really big reason now:
It’s the most direct way to communicate with your audience.
Yes, there’s social media but people are so distracted when they’re on Instagram or inside Facebook groups.
And with the way algorithms are nowadays, there’s a chance that most of your audience won’t even see your posts!
When you’re launching something, communication is KEY.
Because people miss things on social media. They aren’t checking your website every day.
But everyone’s in their inbox 24/7!
Okay, now that we’re on the same level, let’s dive into the 5 strategies to grow your email list of potential customers before you launch!5 Strategies to Grow Your Email List for a Profitable Product Launch Click To Tweet
1. Create a Signature Opt-In Freebie and Promote in Your Top Blog Posts
The very first thing I recommend doing is to create and launch a signature opt-in freebie that is directly related to your digital product.
Now, you probably know that you need to create opt-ins to grow your list, but I want you to realize that in order to build your list of potential customers, you need to be really intentional with WHAT the freebie is.
For instance, if you’re launching an eBook of vegan recipes, having a blog post checklist isn’t going to attract people who will want to buy your recipes, k?
If you follow my 3-phase launch strategy you will have an idea of what kind of content to include in your freebie.
Here are 3 elements of a kickass opt-in freebie:
- Directly related to product
- Promises a quick solution your target audience is struggling with
- Helps your subscribers achieve a specific result
As far as WHAT kind of freebie to create, here are high-converting formats I recommend:
- Email Course
- Video Trainings
- Audio Trainings
If you need help with the creation process of opt-ins, I have a blog post on that here.
The next step is to add the freebie to your most popular blog posts and any blog posts you plan on posting leading up to your launch.
I recommend going into your analytics and seeing which posts are your top performing.
Keep in mind that they need to relate to your product and freebie!
2. Create & Promote Opt-In Signup Page on Pinterest
Once you create your freebie and add it to your blog posts, the party isn’t over.
The secret to increasing your opt-in conversions is to create a landing page specifically for that opt-in and promote it on Pinterest.
This means you’ll want to create multiple graphics promoting your opt-in and pin them to Pinterest.
Yup, this is the same strategy to promote your blog posts!
I will even give you another tip and suggest you create more pins for your top performing blog posts to bring in more traffic and get eyes on that opt-in.
3. Promote Opt-In to Social Media Followers
On top of Pinterest, you should also promote your opt-in to your social media followers.
The big platforms are Instagram and Facebook, so these tips will apply specifically to those.
- Add the freebie link to your profile
- Create posts that share why you created the opt-in and how it can help your audience (and tell people how they can sign up for it)
- Create Instagram story templates that promote the freebie
- Hop on Instagram Stories or Instagram Live and talk about the freebie or share one tip that’s included in it
- Mention the freebie (when relevant) in comment replies and messages
If you have a Facebook group don’t be scared of promoting the freebie to your members!
As far as your own Facebook page, create and schedule a few posts that talk about the freebie and why it will help your audience.
At the end of the day, you shouldn’t be afraid of promoting your amazing opt-in to your followers.
They are following you because they have a problem and know you can help them!
4. Host a Live Webinar on a Related Topic to Your Product
This is where it gets good!
Live video is honestly the best and fastest way to connect with your audience, earn their trust, and sell your products.
And it’s also the best way to grow your email list in a short amount of time of ideal customers who are ready to buy your product.
Which is why I always host a live webinar when I launch a new product!
Webinars are my highest converting opt-in for a few reasons:
- They are packed with a lot of valuable and FREE information
- Viewers can see, hear, and talk to me in real time (connection factor!)
- They are super actionable and motivating
So how do you come up with a webinar topic that people will sign up for?
First of all, you need to sit down and ask yourself, “what does my target audience want?”
If you have no idea, it’s time to survey your audience and ask them! Instagram Stories is the best and fastest way to do this.
No audience? No problem. Use Quora to start researching common questions people have around your niche.
You still want to pack the webinar with a ton of value, but if your audience is ready for the next step to take to achieve their desired results, they’ll be ready to press buy.
Some things you’ll need for your webinar:
- Sign up page to collect email addresses (I recommend LeadPages)
- Slides (Google Slides will do)
- Live stream platform (I recommend YouTube Live)
5. Host an Online Challenge or Live Training Series
Online challenges and live training series can be a great way to not only grow your email list but also boost engagement with your audience.
There are many different ways you can host a challenge, but the main thing you want to keep in mind is to require people to signup via email so you can collect their email addresses.
I personally recommend hosting a challenge that’s between 3 and 7 days long.
As far as trainings, the same time frame can work too. It really depends on the material you’re teaching!
People can quickly lose momentum after a week. You’ll lose engagement and participation (remember, we want attentive and warmed up subscribers ready to buy!)
The biggest thing to keep in mind when creating your challenge is to structure it in a way to give your subscribers quick results.
Break each day into bite-sized chunks and give them something super actionable and achievable to do.
Pro-Tip: Creating a workbook to go along with the challenge/trainings is a great bonus to get them involved. They will also see the value in your FREE challenge and only have good things to think about in regards to your PAID offerings.
Case Study: Make Your First $500 Blogger Challenge
I hosted a free 5-day challenge before the launch of my signature program, Blog to Biz Academy and incorporated pre-recorded video trainings that were delivered via emails that I scheduled ahead of time.
Challengers also received a bonus workbook which people loved!
I took it a step further (because I’m extra) and went live inside my Facebook group every day to teach a bonus lesson that complemented the daily trainings.
This really helped to get my audience engaged and implement what they were learning to get those small wins.
You definitely don’t have to do both of these things, but I will recommend making sure to have some kind of live training or Q&A incorporated into your challenge so you connect with your audience in real time!
To give you perspective: With the challenge and webinar, I enrolled 7 new students into my program, making over $2,000 for my launch!
