What is your biggest fear when it comes to launching your first digital product?
That people won’t buy it? That you spent a lot of time creating it and end up making zero sales?
That you’re not meant to profit from your passion and will be stuck doing some unfulfilling job to make an income for the rest of your life?
In this post, I want to help you overcome these fears so you can become the badass boss babe you are with the power of digital products!
I’m talking about 7 HUGE mistakes people make when they sell their first digital product.
Keep reading to learn how you can avoid them so you have a successful and profitable launch!
1. Don’t Validate Their Product
This is the first step you ABSOLUTELY need to take before anything else.
Your goal during this step is to determine whether there is a demand for your product idea.
Before you actually create something, you gotta make sure people actually want it.
This sounds so simple but believe me, people always skip this part because they don’t take it seriously enough.
Until they make zero sales!
So make sure you spend time doing market research, surveying your audience, and TALKING to your audience.
Get a deep understanding of their problems and desires and make sure your product is exactly what they need.
Mindset Tip: Validating your product will also give you a major confidence boost because when you know that people are excited about your product idea, you’ll feel *validated* and encouraged to create it!
2. Don’t Build an Email List of Potential Buyers
You knew this one was coming right?
A business isn’t a business without an email list it seems…
BUT IT’S TRUE!
Having an email list is the most direct way to communicate with your audience about your product.
And it’s also a great way to build up your audience and then warm them up before you launch (more on this in a second!)
You can totally sell products on Instagram or Facebook (I know it can be done!) BUT if you’re starting from the bottom and want a method that is proven to get results, an email list is where it’s at.
NOW maybe you already have an email list and already have subscribers (WOO HOO!)
But here’s my next question: are they people who are going to be interested in buying your product?
How did they get on your email list?
What do they expect from you?
This is where people go wrong.
They have the subscribers, but when they go to launch they fail to hit their goals…
And then they realize all the opt-in freebies they created to grow their list have nothing to do with their product.
Like, everyone showed up for planning printables and then you launch an eBook on healthy fitness habits…
Now don’t worry, I’ve been building my email list for almost 2 years now and I’ve offered a lot of different opt-ins…
And then when I go to launch a new product and don’t see as many sales as I’d like, I’m reminded that it’s because the people on my email list don’t need it.

3. No Launch Strategy/Plan
This is a biggie!
Even if you avoid all the other mistakes but still make this one, you’re not leveraging the potential for driving more sales.
And if you don’t have a big audience or no audience at all and you launch your product without a launch strategy…you’re setting yourself up for failure.
I see so many bloggers put so much effort into creating their first digital product and then when the cart opens…crickets.
I mean, that’s a crappy feeling. To pour so much energy into something and get nothing in return.

The good news is that you can totally avoid this by planning an effective launch strategy!

4. Don’t Create Hype On Social Media
This mistake piggybacks off of not having a launch strategy, but I want to go into it a little deeper.
Most entrepreneurs who launch something that no one buys tend to go into negative self-talk mode and think that their product sucks.
That no one wanted it. And that no one will want anything else you sell.
But it’s not that people aren’t interested…
THEY DON’T KNOW YOUR PRODUCT EXISTS!
This is why having a launch strategy is so important so you can build up hype before you launch to get people excited and ready to press buy.
But I’m going to go one step further and advise you to make sure you’re showing up on social media and consistently hype up your product the closer and closer you get to your launch date.
Why? Because everyone’s on social media 24/7. And it’s a great opportunity to get your product on people’s minds.
Plus since social media is all about connection and community, it’s going to boost your know, like, and trust factor too.
And people only buy things from people they trust!
So make sure you’re showing up on the social media platform your audience is hanging out on and giving them all the behind the scenes of your product.
They’re going to love seeing it come together and then when you tell them it’s ready for purchase, they’re going to be so hyped up they won’t think twice to get their wallet out!
5. Don’t Create the Right Content to Warm Up Their Audience
Okay so maybe you’re showing up on social media, sending out weekly newsletters, posting on the blog every week…
You’re following my launch strategy but people still don’t buy…
Well this problem might be you weren’t warming up your audience strategically.
Let me explain.
If your warm-up material isn’t DIRECTLY RELATED to your digital product, you’re going to:
- attract the wrong people
- make no sales
This is a mistake I’ve made many many times and each time it’s happened, I learned that I wasn’t creating the right kind of content to warm up my audience.
OR the content I did create to grow my audience wasn’t related to my product.
And now as I look back on my failed launches, it makes total sense why I made zero to no sales…
So if you’re launching a vegan recipe eBook DON’T post blog and social media content that’s on topics OTHER than vegan food/lifestyle!
Be purposeful with your warm-up content and the sales will come.
6. They Spend More Time Creating the Product Than Marketing
Okay this is definitely a big mistake I made when I launched my first eBook!
I gave myself 3 months to create & launch it, but I spent 2 out of the 3 months CREATING IT!
Now you might be thinking, what’s wrong with that? I need to create the thing before I sell it, right?
When month 3 came and it was time to go into launch mode I had so many things I needed to do to market it that I stressed myself out SO MUCH.
And here’s the thing: you need a marketing plan to have a successful launch. Whether you have 2 people in your audience or 2,000…you need a PLAN.
And boy, I had one. I had a GREAT plan. But it was a HUGE plan that I didn’t give myself enough time to implement.
And I ended up pushing the launch date of my eBook TWICE.
And I didn’t even finish the eBook!
So if you want my advice and to sell yourself stress and make sure you have a kickass marketing plan (and the time to implement it!) you intentionally plan your launch.
7. Not Passionate About the Product
The last mistake is a MINDSET one.
Because entrepreneurship isn’t just about marketing and sales…there’s a lot of inner work that needs to be done to build a successful business.
And if you aren’t 100% obsessed with your product and genuinely KNOW it will help so many people, then your heart’s not in the right place.
And there are usually two ways this can go:
- You have a successful launch, but deep down you’re absolutely miserable
- You have a failed launch, and you’re absolutely miserable
While the first one might be the lesser of two evils, you’ll quickly get burned out because you’re running a business that’s driven by sales rather than passion.
And to build a profitable and purposeful business, passion needs to come first.
I’ll be the first to admit that my business has taken a little while to grow (it’s grown SO much, but I also know that I’ve watched other people grow FASTER).
And part of that reason is because I choose to grow it slow. I follow my heart first.
And if that means choosing the least profitable niche, or not niching down enough until I feel like it’s right (totally did this for the longest time)…
But as long as I feel good about what I’m doing, I have trust that I will get to where I want to be in my business in the most perfect way.
So I encourage you to build your business from a place of intention and purpose and NOT out of greed or vanity.
Bonus Mindset Mistake: You’re Struggling With Limiting Beliefs
Okay, I had to include this bonus mindset mistake (should I even call it a mistake?!) because I know that so many of you struggle with this area.
And that’s not believing that you have anything useful to offer and if people will even buy your products.
Girl. I have BEEN THERE!
And honestly, that negative self-talk comes back to haunt me every once in a while. It haunts EVERYONE.
But if there’s one thing I’ve learned in my journey so far, it’s that entrepreneurship is about taking risks and conquering your fear.
Know this: there is enough space for you in the business world. And there are so many people who will benefit from what you have the offer!!
