One thing that makes me want to rip my hair out is when I chat with bloggers about how to start making money and they start telling me about the ways they can’t.
Because they have these narratives stuck in their head about how they THINK they SHOULD be making money. Because they read it in a blog post somewhere.
In this post, I want to break the 3 biggest blogger money-making myths I hear on an everyday basis that are holding you back from actually monetizing your blog.
Because it doesn’t have to be hard y’all. In fact: making money with your blog can be EASY. And I have the step-by-step process to help you get there (grab the free roadmap here to have that process waiting in your inbox!)
So whether you’re a beginner blogger, a novice blogger, and are thinking about starting a blog, you can make money!! But you will NOT make money if you continue to believe the myths that I’m about to shatter.

Biggest Blogger Money Making Myths You Need to Stop Believing ASAP Click To Tweet
1. Advertisements Are a Great Way to Monetize
Whenever people tell me they want to focus on adding advertisements to their blog to earn money I have to stop them dead in their tracks: you’re not serious, are you?
I feel like this is one of the hugest money-making myths because it’s all over the internet on (just about) every single “how to make money blogging” blog post or article.
The truth is making money with advertisements on your blog used to be a great strategy…YEARS AGO. Back when there were FEWER blogs out there.
Now that the industry is so saturated, you need to be bringing in a TON of traffic to make a consistent income from advertisements.
To give you context: I recently got my first payout from Google AdSense a few months ago…for over $100.
The thing is, I’ve had Google AdSense on my website for OVER a year. Like a year and a half!
And I get over 50,000 monthly pageviews guys.
THIS IS NOT A GOOD INCOME STRATEGY IF YOU WANT TO MAKE A CONSISTENT INCOME AND TURN YOUR BLOG INTO A BUSINESS.
It’s a great way to make extra money, but you shouldn’t be setting goals around it. Especially as a newbie with not a lot of traffic.
Don’t worry, you can make lots of money with little traffic. Just wait until I get to that part!
One other thing is that all these blog posts and articles you’re reading are SO outdated. You know, the ones that pop up on Google when you search “how to make money blogging”?
Paid advertisements can be a great extra bit of cash. But don’t plan to grow your blog into a business with them as a core income stream.
2. I HAVE to Work with Brands to Make Good Money with My Blog
Don’t get me wrong…paid partnerships/brand sponsorships are definitely a great income stream for bloggers.
And I know there are lots of bloggers out there killin’ it and making a full-time income because of this income stream.
BUT if you DON’T want to work with brands, what are you supposed to think and feel?
Like you’re not good enough to get paid for brand deals because you don’t have a lot of pageviews or Instagram followers?
Because that’s how I felt before I rebranded.
I thought that I had to work with brands. I needed a media kit. I needed x,xxxx pageviews, and xx,xxx social media followers and xxx% engagement rate.
I was stuck in this narrative that I needed to put myself out there and pitch myself to brands if I wanted to turn my blog into a full-time income.
And because I was stuck in this narrative…when I looked at my stats to see if I “measured up” for a campaign, only to see that I “wasn’t qualified”… it made me frustrated.
And I questioned whether turning my blog into a business was actually worth it.
This is how my fashion blog turned me into somebody I didn’t like. Because I was focused on the perfect Instagram feed. Getting more followers. Increasing my traffic.
Because I “needed” the numbers to make an income.
Do you feel this way? What if I told you that this is bullshit.
Now, there are definitely amazing brands out there who DO work with bloggers with a “small following” so shoutout to them.
BUT if the thought of working with brands and pitching yourself to them makes your stomach churn, then that’s not the income stream for you.
Because you have something more to give. You were called to make an impact BIGGER than taking pretty pictures showcasing a product and sharing the benefits about it.
You have a gift to serve others through a connection.
I’m talking about building relationships. Cultivating community. Teaching. Coaching. Mentorship.
If you’re resonating with what I’m saying right now, you are meant to help others through your own unique gifts and skills.
When you can feel confident about which route you’d like to take and most importantly, feel damn good about it you will have a better sense of direction and confidence to reach your blogging money-making goals.
You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do or think you *should* be doing to make money blogging. There are lots of ways to monetize that allow you to use your unique gifts to help others without needing a certain number of followers or pageviews. You don't need to do what you think you *should* be doing because you read it online somewhere. You need to do what feels GOOD! Click To Tweet
3. You Need Lots of Traffic to Make Money
Well…if you read my first point about advertisements, this is true.
But since you’re going to take my advice and throw that income stream out the window, you’re ready for something that doesn’t require hundreds of thousands of pageviews a month, right?
One of the HUGEST myths I see that my community is believing is that they need more traffic to start making money.
Or their goals revolve around the idea of more traffic = more money. “I want to increase my pageviews to 1,000 a month so I can start monetizing my blog!”
Um, girlfriend. Why are you stuck in this narrative that more traffic = more money?
Oh right, because you read that on some blog post that was published in 2014.
You don’t need a lot of traffic. YOU NEED A WARM AUDIENCE.
No matter how much traffic you get on your website a month, if you have an audience who are clinging onto your every word, open every single newsletter, show up and comment on your Instagram posts, are always replying to your stories, and who are just genuinely obsessed with you…
Then you’re ready to start making money with your blog.
So PLEASE: I want you to vow to me now that you do not need a lot of pageviews to make money.
Get this idea out of your head and replace it with “I need a warm audience of raving fans who love me and are ready to buy from me to start making money with my blog.”
REWRITE THIS AS YOUR NEW TRUTH. SEE IT. BELIEVE IT. MAKE IT HAPPEN.
You don’t need a lot of traffic to make money blogging. You need a warm audience who loves you and is ready to buy from because you have an awesome product that’s going to help them solve a specific problem.Think you need a ton of traffic to monetize your blog? Think again. Click To Tweet
One Last Thing
I feel like I need to address something in this post because as I’ve been writing this I can envision people not agreeing with a lot of my points.
Specifically the point about needing a lot of traffic to make money.
I want to say this: I know and understand that if you’re in the influencer realm and DO want to work with brands and earn an income, that numbers DO matter.
Believe me, that’s why I got away from that income stream.
Because it didn’t feel good to me.
And since I’m one of the most objective people you’ll ever meet (I went to school for history and LOVE seeing both sides of the story) I totally understand if you disagree with me.
So that’s why this blog post is only for bloggers who are feeling stuck and caught up in this rabbit hole that I was in.
That their blogs and Instagrams were making them feel like crap about themselves, yet they still had this passion burning inside them to turn their blog into something more.
And that’s why I help bloggers make money through selling their own stuff. Their knowledge. Their expertise.
Not somebody else’s stuff.
And if that’s not you, I’m totally fine with that!
You’re not my target audience 🙂
