You’re on a mission to turn your blog into a business, but it’s not going as quickly as you would like. It’s a new year. The possibilities are endless. Success is within reach. How can you make it happen, like now?
If you’re up for a challenge, I have 8 ways to turn your blog into a business faster in 2019. But you have to be open to new strategies and most importantly: open to change. The fact that you haven’t accomplished your goal yet is because 1) you’re doing the wrong things or 2) you’re not taking action.
So let’s fix that. Keep reading to learn the top ways to grow your blog into a business FASTER in 2019. You’ll learn what things that are holding you back, how to drop them, and what to focus on to go from blogger to business owner THIS YEAR.
1. Map Out Your Ideal Life and Non-Business Goals First
It’s a brand new year, so you’ve probably already sat down and worked on setting some goals for 2019.
Instead of thinking about blog & business goals, think about your ideal life. What does that look like? What do you want in life?
Then ask yourself why. Journal all that ish out if you want. Journaling is where my best ideas come to life!
THEN after you mapped out what you want your life to look like in 2019 (and beyond because it’s totally okay to plan beyond this year!) ask yourself how your business can help you achieve that.
So maybe if your non-business goal is to pay off an extra $5,000 on your student loans this year, your business can help you achieve that faster by bringing in an extra $500 a month. And so forth.
When you work backward from this model you’ll instantly have more motivation and focus to:
- Set AND achieve your goals but also
- Set the RIGHT goals to help you get closer to your vision and ideal life
2. Set Your *Achievable* Business Goals
With your vision and WHY mapped out, you can move on to the goal-setting and planning part for your business (aka the fun part if you’re a nerd like me.)
Refer back to your ideal life and non-business goals. Let’s use the same example of paying off an extra $5,000 on your student loans.
How can my business help me achieve that? Well, if I divide $5,000 by 12 months that comes out to roughly $417 a month that I should strive to put towards my student loans.
That gives me direction for my business goals.
I want to make $1,000 a month from my business. Part of that will go towards my business expenses (Profit First, anyone?) and then the rest I can put towards my student loan.
Now if you don’t have any student loans, congrats! You can use this same model to save up for a trip, help you take your side hustle to full-time so you can quit your 9-5, or to simply scale your business.
My point is that if you can get clear on what you want your life to look like you’ll be able to set meaningful goals that get you excited to make them happen.Get clear on your ideal life. Set meaningful goals. Make it happen! Click To Tweet
3. Create an Action Plan to Reach Your Goals
I am a huge fan of quarterly goals. If you’re not already doing it, I highly suggest trying it. In business, we take on a lot of projects.
And if you have a 9-5, you’re going to need more than a month to complete said projects.
You can break your annual goal down into:
- Hourly (I’m kidding)
For me, I stick to quarterly and monthly goals and have weekly action items.
The weekly stuff consists of project-based tasks I work on to help me achieve my monthly and quarterly goals.
4. Define and Narrow Your Niche
Okay, let’s move away from goal-setting and project planning and talk about business strategy.
Defining and narrowing your niche in 2019 will be a huge game-changer for you.
Last year I spent the majority of my time exploring and “figuring out my niche.” Basically, I was all over the place.
When you start out as a blogger, it can be hard to not be all over the place because you naturally want to write about whatever feels good or is going on in your life at that moment.
While in 2018 I definitely had a niche and focus, I wasn’t specific enough.
But when I niched down in quarter 4, I noticed that I started making more money and even better: consistent monthly income. Which is the goal when you’re in business, right?!
I know the struggle of being a blogger who doesn’t want to be put in a box.
I tried to fight it, but when I let go of my resistance and tried to niche down and actually loved it AND got results from it…I embraced it. And now I will preach it to you.
If you niche down in 2019 you WILL see results in your business.
And by results, I mean ca$h flow.
5. Identify Your Income Generating Tasks
Okay, time to move into productivity & time management tips because after you set your goals, have an action plan, defined your niche, it’s time to get to work and get ish done.
And that’s where a lot of wanna-be biz owners get stuck.
They don’t know what to work on to grow their business. And they end up working on the things that don’t bring in money.
Trust me, I did this for a lot of 2018. But the good thing is that you can totally avoid it…By identifying your income generating tasks.
I like to call these your “Non-Negotiables.” These are the things that need to get done every week and will push you towards your goals.
How do you identify your non-negotiables? They are the things that:
- Grow your audience (because you need an audience to make money) and
- Will bring in money (i.e. creating products, launching, sales funnels, pitching, etc.)
When you do your brain dump of ideas and tasks to complete you need to go through each and every item and ask yourself a series of questions. Will this…
- Help me reach my business goals?
- Bring in revenue?
- Grow my audience?
- Earn my audience’s trust so they become a potential customer?
If you have a 9-5 like me you’ll quickly realize that you will NOT be able to do #allthethings and will have to drop the things that don’t push you forward. Let’s talk about that nextIf you're not making the kind of money you want in your business yet it's because you're spending your time on the wrong things! Click To Tweet
6. Drop Time-Wasters
Armed with your non-negotiables, it’s time to drop what isn’t pushing you further. Sacrifices will have to be made but reconnect with your vision and why to keep you focused.
This part will be a hard reality for some people. You’ll realize that a lot of what you’re doing has to be dropped.
And if you’re stubborn like me (Hello Taurus problems) you’ll hold a lot of resistance and refuse to drop some things (maybe because you’re a people pleaser. Or you hate change. Or you’re scared…)
2018 was the year I realized what my major time-wasters were.
As I reflected on my year and the revenue goals I didn’t hit, I had to analyze what I did with my time that held me back from hitting those goals.
Here are just a few things that might be on your time-wasters list:
- Aimlessly scrolling on social media
- Checking your inbox every 5 minutes
- Downloading freebie after freebie
- Changing your website layout
- Obsessing over Pinterest images and graphics in general
7. Join a Mastermind Group
Joining a mastermind will really elevate your business. Every mastermind is different. Some are free, most are paid. It really depends on what you’re trying to get out of one.
If you’re just starting out, I recommend creating a mastermind group that is free for everyone to join. The problem, however, with free groups is that some people might not put their 100% energy into it and neglect it.
Masterminds work when everyone involved is committed.
During your mastermind session, you can share your struggles and successes, ask questions, get feedback, and get help in certain areas of your business.
If you don’t want to grow your biz alone and want to grow it faster, having a mastermind will help you tremendously!
8. Invest in a Course, Program or Coach
Okay, this last one is for the major go-getters who are on a mission to make sh*t happen in 2019! The fastest way to grow your business besides stopping time? Investing in a course, program, or coach.
I know it’s scary to dish out money into something that isn’t already making money (i.e. your biz.) But that’s exactly the problem many bloggers struggle with…
They don’t want to invest in themselves.
Their blog and soon-to-be business aren’t important enough to them. They don’t really want it. Or they’re really scared.
When I was still a hobby blogger the only thing I invested in was my domain name. Which was fine! But when I began to take my blog more seriously and realized, hey I can totally turn this into a money-making machine…I started to invest money in it.
Yup. My own money. Because yeah–I wasn’t making any money in my business, yet.
But I definitely made it back after I made the investments.
I’ve invested in so many things in the past 2 years: eBooks, courses, group coaching programs, strategy sessions, templates, workbooks…
And I owe my quick success in investing in them. Because if I didn’t put money into those things, I would literally still be on Pinterest, trying to learn everything on my own.
I would also probably be blogging about random things and not have any strategy in place. I might have made some money, but it wouldn’t be as much as I actually made after the investments.
So in 2019, I encourage you to invest in something that will truly help you grow your blog into a business.
Whether it’s an eBook, course, program, or coaching…these are all things that will help you SAVE TIME and grow your business FASTER.
