Welcome to day 2! How was your soul-searching? Did it bring more clarity and validation about your blog and where you would like to take it?
Today is all about framing your focus. Without focus you’re more likely to:
- feel uncertain about what kind of content to write and sponsorships to take on
- get overwhelmed about all the tasks that come along with blogging such as writing, photography, social media, promotion, replying to comments + emails, etc.
- fail to grow your audience
Remember my crash and burn story from yesterday’s reading? Well, there was a second part to that.
On top of having a lack of focus + motivated by dollar signs, I was writing about everything under the sun: fashion, lifestyle, personal development, self-care, blogging…I’m a multi-passionate person, what can I say? I like a lot of things.
I was trying to blog for EVERYONE because I thought that writing about broad topics would maximize my appeal to different readers. Now, there are many bloggers out there who write about a multitude of topics and are hella successful. Do you know what sets them apart?
They have a super specific focus and know their audience. They know what their blog’s message is and who they’re writing it for. I had NO message and didn’t know who I was writing for. In my mind, I was writing for everyone. And since I was writing about so many different things, no one could connect with my blog. Sure, they found some value in one of my posts, but after clicking around and seeing all the OTHER things I wrote about, they got bored and moved on.
Maybe you’ve read other bloggers write about how you need a super specific niche to stand out and grow a successful blog. While there is certainly truth to this, I firmly believe that you do not need a niche to be a successful blogger. What you do need is a narrow focus and a firm grasp on who your readers are.
Today’s worksheet is going to help you create your dream reader. In the blogging world your dream reader is also known as an ideal reader, target reader/audience, etc. I’m calling it your dream reader because I really want you to create an image in your head of WHO you’re writing directly to. Download the worksheet below.
Here are some questions to guide you:
- Give them a name and create a short reader profile
- What gender are they? How old are they? What’s their education level and occupation?
- Are they married? Single? Do they have kids? What’s their home life like?
- What are their hobbies and interests? What are their favorite stores?
- What blogs do they like to read?
- What are their primary concerns in life right now?
- What are their struggles? What keeps them up at night?
- How can you use your blog to help them?
Next, create a short reader profile of your reader and post it in our Facebook group. I’ll be sharing mine on there to give you an example if you’re feeling stuck.
